The North American and Pelican nebula are a pair of emission nebulas, that closely resemble the continent of North America and the Gulf of Mexico. The redish glow seen is a result of ionized hydrogen atoms recombining with electrons. The dark clouds surrounding this nebula are cool clouds of gas, acting as a veil for active star forming regions. This is the star nursery of our universe.
