5200 light years away the Lagoon nebula and surrounding emission nebulas, comprised of mostly hydrogen gas - the most abundant element in our universe. Within the lagoon nebula is a huge region of high energy star formation, full of young hot stars. This causes gas to ionize, emitting a huge amount of energy that is converted to light, creating this bright nebulosity. The size of this nebula is huge covering over 110 light years, making it over 8000x larger than our entire solar system.
